Overview

Two PhD positions are open !

04.05.2018

PhD position on "Semicrystalline polymer actuators"

Background of the project: Among the whole variety of actuating polymers known so far only ones based on the melting/crystallization processes demonstrate a combination of important properties such as reversibility of actuation in absence of fields and solvents and actuation in the temperature range, which is practically relevant. There are several examples of such materials, but the physical origin of their actuation mechanism still remains elusive. This hampers a rational design of the actuation for instance by tailored modification of polymer properties.

Objectives of PhD thesis: The objective of the PhD thesis is the investigation of mechanisms of reversible actuation of semicrystalline polymers and to elucidate the correlations between thermal crystallization of crosslinked and entangled polymers under load and their chemical as well as physical structure.

Requirements and duties: The successful candidate has a MSc degree in Chemistry/Polymer Chemistry/Physical Chemistry/Material Science. Previous experience with polymeric materials as well as their analytical investigation is highly desired. A strong motivation for science and proficient written and oral communication skills in English are crucial for the successful completion of this challenging project.

PhD position on "Fabrication of microfibers with complex interior using 3D printing"

Background of the project: New generation of smart textiles, where signal perception, processing and imaging occurs inside flexible fibers, requires development of methods for fabrication of fibers with high complex inner architectures. This is, however, extremely challenging task. Basing on own experience, we will develop a revolutionary approach for fabrication of such fibers using shape-changing polymers.

Objectives of PhD thesis: The objective of the PhD thesis is development of novel approach for fabrication of fibers with compex interior using shape-changing polymers and understanding of fundamental principles of deposition of polymers and polymer microfibers with controlled orientation.
